Coinkite Coldcard

Coinkite’s Coldcard is a simple design and easy to use Bitcoin security hardware in which you can store your Bitcoins. The company Coinkite is a leading bitcoin security expert and hardware manufacturer. ColdCards are manufactured in Canada and delivered with a tamper evident numbered bag which makes sure you are the first user and your information is secure with the device.

ColdCard stands out with its offline signing with the MicroSD feature. You don’t need any special software to use Coldcard, because it accepts standard PSBT (Partially Signed Bitcoin Transaction) transactions stored on a MicroSD card. ColdCard code is open source. All you need to do is connect ColdCard to your computer.

You can connect ColdCard to your computer with a micro USB data cable or using a MicroSD card. But for extended security purposes, avoid connecting ColdCard with a cable, and use the MicroSD method instead.

You can insert a MicroSD in its place on the back of the device, transfer wallet info to the memory card then take the memory card off and insert it to any computer you want to use. By doing so, you don’t transfer your wallet, you simply make a copy of your wallet’s public info only, it is called skeleton wallet file, generated by the Coldcard hardware, After you save the skeleton wallet file on your computer, you can see your balance, send or receive funds. When you are sending funds, you can initiate a transfer order on the computer and save a file to MicroSD and then finalize the process by inserting MicroSD to the ColdCArd, completing confirmations, finally, you need to take the MicroSD card off and insert it back to the computer to broadcast the transaction. The option of using a MicroSD instead of connecting hardware wallet device to a computer is a great feature that makes your funds even safer against all kinds of hackings.

What makes ColdCard even safer is having multi chip inside. Private keys are stored in a security chip which is used only for this purpose. The main microchip is used for all other activities.

You are required to enter PIN code every time you want to use ColdCard. Coldcard accepts Bitcoin only. You can not store other cryptos.

Coldcard has excellent reviews overall, Very easy to use, and simple design with high security. ColdCard has a full-sized numeric keypad and 128x64 pixel OLED screen. The size of the device is bigger than other USB-like wallets. It is a size of a small desk calculator. As it is big enough and has a keypad, navigating is easy. ColdCard’s safety is top level, especially with multi chip function. The company behind the ColdCard is CoinKite which is a leading Bitcoin security expert and hardware manufacturer. The ability to use ColdCard offline with MicroSD is another top level security function. If you forget the PIN code you used for the device, there is no way back. It raises the security standards but users should be careful about this. The company can't provide any help if the PIN is forgotten.

The downside is ColdCard supports Bitcoin only for now. The company announced that they are working on expanding the number of cryptocurrencies supported by their hardware in the future. Ethereum is expected to be the second available crypto accepted by ColdCard.

The Coldcard can easily be used with many major online wallet providers such as BTCPay, Bluewallet, Electrum, and Wasabi Wallet. The ColdCard comes in at a good price when compared to same tier security providing wallet hardwares. Price/Security ratio is too high compared to compatitors.
